Harmony writing
Write the other voices over a given bass, a figured bass or a melody, and see where the voice-leading rules are broken, marked on the staff with the reason. Every exercise is generated fresh on your device, and the page marks and counts the places where the rules are broken. Level 1 is free, no account needed.
About harmony writing
What does it check?
The places where your voices break the rules of four-part writing that we have written down: the notes of each chord, the range and spacing of the voices, crossing, parallel fifths and octaves, and how the leading tone and a seventh move. Each one is marked on the staff, with the reason. Where the textbooks disagree, it does not mark an error.
Is there only one right answer?
No. Many ways of writing the voices follow every rule. The model answer, shown after your first try, is one of them. If you write something different that breaks no rule, that is just as good.
Does it grade me?
No. It counts the places to change and shows each one on the staff. There is no score and no stars, and your attempt is not saved.
How do I enter notes?
Pick a voice and a chord, then click a line or space on the staff, press a key on the on-screen keyboard or a MIDI keyboard, or type a note name from C to B. The arrow keys move between chords and step the note up or down.
Is anything saved?
No. Each exercise is made on your device, and the places that break a rule are found there too. The level you choose is remembered on your account, and the time you spend counts toward your practice record.
Which levels are free?
Level 1 is open to everyone, with or without an account. The other levels are part of Max.
