Improvise over a band
Play over a bass, drums and piano that follow the chords of a 12-measure blues, a vamp, a pop loop or a ii–V–I, in every key. After each take the page draws your solo and counts where your notes fell, and never grades it. Level 1 is free, no account needed.
About improvising here
What does it count?
How many notes you played, how many landed on the band’s beat, how many were on strong beats and how many of those were chord tones, how many were outside the chord and how many of those stepped into a chord tone, your range, how many measures you left empty, and your longest phrase. It never gives a grade.
Is a note outside the chord a mistake?
No. Improvisers play outside notes on purpose and then resolve them. The map shows where each one went so that you can hear it for yourself.
Can I play without a MIDI keyboard?
Yes. Use the on-screen keyboard, the computer keys, or the microphone. A microphone only hears when you play, not which notes, so it counts the beat and the space and nothing about pitch. Wear headphones with it, or the band will count as you.
Is my playing saved?
No. It stays in this page’s memory so you can hear it again, and it is gone when you leave. Only the level you choose and the time you spend are saved.
Which level is free?
Level 1, the 12-measure blues in F, B♭ or C, is open to everyone, with or without an account. The other levels are part of Max.
