Metronome

A free online metronome from 30 to 250 BPM with tap tempo, time signatures from 2/4 to 12/8 with an accented downbeat, and eighth, triplet, or sixteenth clicks.

The click is scheduled on your device’s audio clock, so it stays steady at any tempo from 30 to 250 beats per minute. Choose a time signature and the first beat of every measure is accented; choose a subdivision to hear the eighths, triplets, or sixteenths inside each beat. To find the tempo of a piece, tap along with it: after two taps the reading appears, and it settles as you keep going.

How to use it

About the metronome

How do I find the BPM of a song?

Play the song and tap along with its beat, on the Tap button or the T key. The reading follows the last eight beats you tap and ignores a single uneven one, so keep tapping for a few seconds until the number stops moving.

What tempo should I practice at?

Slow enough to play the passage without a mistake, then a few beats per minute faster each day. A passage that is even at a slow tempo speeds up cleanly; one rushed from the start stays uneven.

How do I use a metronome in 6/8?

Choose 6/8 and the metronome counts two beats a measure, each a dotted quarter note, the way the music is felt. The tempo then means dotted quarters per minute; add eighths to hear all six.

What does the number mean?

Beats per minute: at 60 there is one click a second, at 120 two. The beat is the one the time signature counts, a quarter note in 4/4 and a dotted quarter in 6/8.

Is it free, and is anything saved?

It is free, with no account. Nothing is saved or sent: the click is made on your device, and the tempo you tap never leaves it.
