Free note reading practice for piano: name the note on the staff or press its key. Treble clef, bass clef or both, with or without ledger lines.
The questions are the ones the course’s reading lessons ask, with the same explanation when an answer is wrong: where the note sits and which landmark note to count from. Choose the clef, whether the notes stay on the five lines and four spaces or reach a ledger line beyond them, and how to answer. It is free, needs no account, and records nothing.
How it works
- Choose how to answer: name the note by its letter, or press its key on the keyboard.
- Choose the clef: treble, bass, or both mixed together.
- Choose the notes: on the staff only, or as far as one ledger line above or below it.
- Answer, read why if it was wrong, and press Next. The line at the top of the card counts your answers.
About note reading practice
How do I learn to read notes faster?
Learn a few landmark notes first: middle C, the G the treble clef curls around, and the F between the bass clef’s two dots. Read every other note as a step or a skip from the nearest landmark. The explanation after a wrong answer works the same way: it names the line or space and the landmark to count from.
Is it free? Do I need an account?
It is free, and no account is needed. Nothing you answer here is recorded. The course’s reading lessons and its review queue are where answers are kept, and where the notes you miss come back to you.
Can I answer on my own piano?
Yes. Choose “Pressing the key”, connect a digital piano over USB and press “Connect a piano”, then play the key. Web MIDI works in Chrome and Edge, so on other browsers the button is not there.
Can a teacher send a class the same practice?
Yes. Choose the settings and copy the link under them. It opens this page with the same clef, notes and way of answering, and nobody needs an account.
